Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amid long stretches of gravel. It would be nice if they came unsummoned, but given our busy lives, that won’t happen. We have to make time for them.

Garden Moments.

Mindfulness and Self Care during the Pandemic
A Spring 2020 Art Story

Spring 2020… the world changed for everyone! With the relentless negative news cycle and anxiety-provoking lockdown measures related to the pandemic, it was hard to relax and take the time to truly be in the moment. It was incredibly easy however to feel worried and stressed!! As the weather improved our small garden became a daily sanctuary for me… an escape from stress during these unsettling times.

Witnessing the beauty and seasonal bursts of new growth within this ever-changing dynamic space, became a positive, nourishing, and much needed morning ritual. Some of these garden moments are captured through quick sketches in the art story above, and reflect the interwoven relationship of mindful art-making, connecting with nature and self-care. I feel blessed and privileged to be able to have these moments of witnessing… creating… being still… and the space to do so.

Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.

Art Notes

The decorative metal garden art in my sketches above are by metal artist, Mark Clark, from the art gallery STŸLL in Guelph. These expressive and whimsical face sculptures are called “Happy Pills”. They are the art that lives in the garden! They make me giggle and smile daily.
