Every Creation Starts with an Armature. Kellie.

Sharing another story from my dear friend Kellie. After multiple attempts, we finally succeeded in an in-person meet up recently as Kellie journeyed to Ontario. She came to participate with Maggie Kat in the Curiosities and Oddities Show at the Convention Centre in Toronto in June. I was incredibly stoked to be able to tag along to visit and view. Thanks for sharing your story about the wonderful wire creations that come to life in your hands Kellie … expressive three dimensional doodles infused with such energy and dynamic sculptural presence. Your photos add a dramatic and atmospheric flare… cinematic of course!

Kellie’s Armature Story.

Armatures are literally the backbone of what I gravitate to as a creator. Whether it’s static or animated, three inches or three metres, every creation starts with an armature. Some artists doodle on paper. I doodle with wire.

My wire sculptures were born from a need to do something while manning the Stray Dog Art House retail shop. I vowed not to operate a space that made customers uncomfortable in being watched as they browsed.

Working on armatures made me comfortable to natter with customers as they browse, while also providing a real time opportunity for customers to see how our pieces are made and engage in conversation.

It makes for a great atmosphere in which the focus is on creating rather than commerce. No two pieces are ever the same and the subject is most often random, with the occasional request.

Some pieces are finished within an afternoon, some over a few days and others get shelved for further tweaking. Ironically, they have become part of my signature work, evolving largely from my coping mechanism as an introvert masking as an extrovert shop keeper. In my world, truth is always stranger than fiction..

History of the Laboratory - Located in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Stray Dog Art House is a workshop based art space that does things a little differently, a little edgier, a little bit against the grain. We believe that art is what an artist produces and an artist is anyone with an intent to create.
